Names of Countries, Their Capitals and Inhabitants
(2003 edition)

This second amended edition of the list of 1997 is at present the most up-to-date and comprehensive publication of its type in Poland, with data it contains being valid at end 2003. Geographers and linguists, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Surveyor General of Poland and the Military Geography Management Unit of the Polish Armed Forces General Staff contributed to the elaboration of the list. The list comprises 192 independent countries, with two additional supplements. The first comprises 64 dependent territories and territories of undefined status, including very rarely mentioned small American territories (Baker Island, Howland Island, Jarvis Island, Johnston Atoll, Kingman Reef, Midway Islands, Navassa Island, Palmyra Atoll and Wake Island), Antarctic territories (Australian Antarctic Territory, British Antarctic Territory, Ross Dependency, French Southern and Antarctic Lands, Peter I Island and Queen Maud Land) as well as North Cyprus, Palestine, West Sahara and Taiwan. 64 autonomous territories are mentioned in the second supplement, including 32 Russian territories (republics, districts and areas).

Glossary of Terminology Used in the Standardization of Geographical Names

This bilingual Polish-English glossary of terminology is Polish edition of Glossary of Toponymic Terminology published by UNGEGN and presented on 7 th UN Conference on the Standardization of Geographical Names (New York, 1998). Glossary contain 375 entities, including 237 definitions (only in Polish) and 138 marks of reference.

Geographical Names of the Republic of Poland

This gazetteer contains the names of around 28,000 geographical features, elaborated on the initiative of the Head Office of Geodesy and Cartography by a team of editors of the State Cartographic Publications Enterprise, corrected and approved by the Commission on Standardization Names of Localities and Physiographical Objects, subordinate to the Council of Ministers Office. The list comprises three parts. The names of provinces, communes and districts of larger towns and cities are given in part 1. Part 2 contains, the names of 22,800 localities with a population exceeding 1000 (and other more important localities); geographic coordinates are given next to each of these together with the province (administrative division from before 1998) and also the commune where they appear. Part 3 contains the names of around 5200 physiographic features (including the names of 2000 rivers and 1800 names of reservoirs) also together with their location. Seven coloured maps of Poland in scales of 1:1,500,000 and 1:6,00,000 are enclosed to the list: Administrative division (2 maps), Natural regions (3 maps), Historical and ethnographic regions and also Forests, national and landscape parks. All titles, texts of forewords and introductions as well as descriptions are given in Polish and English.

Toponymic Guidelines of Poland for Map Editors and Other Users

A supplemented and updated edition has been published of the toponymic guidelines of 1999 (taking new publications as well as changes in the political division of the world and in Poland’s administrative division into account) containing characteristic features of the Polish language (including the international phonetic transcription of Polish letters, orthographic principles, origin of geographic names); discussion about standardizing geographic names in Poland, list of sources used to acquire names (maps, gazetteers); glossary of terms used on maps and map legends; list of countries’ names; list of abbreviations of names and other scripts used on maps and their expansions; list of names of provinces (województwo) and counties (powiat) together with their seats of office. The enclosed coloured administration map displays the division of the country into provinces and counties on the 1 January 2002.
